5 best college football stadiums

5 best college football stadiums

All great stadiums in college football share the following qualities:

1. Size: They don have to be 100,000 seat coliseums, but all great venues are overwhelmingly crowded and suffocating for visiting fans and opponents.

2. Noise: They're deafening, almost to the point where some sort of ear protection plugs, muffs, fingers are needed to protect one's canals and drums.

3. History: They have some sort of back story. Great stadiums aren't built but made, in short.

4. Aesthetics: It might be a nice panoramic view from the west end zone or a picturesque mountain range in the distance, but each great stadium brings a little something extra to the table for the Art History majors.

So which stadium is the best in college football? Geez, this should be easy. All stadiums are great in their own way, but five stand above the rest. Agree, disagree? Let's hear about it. A subjective list:

(Original photo by Kirby Lee, USA TODAY Sports; Illustration by Tim McGarry, USA TODAY Sports)

Autzen Stadium (Eugene, Ore.):No place gets John Kuhn Jersey louder, according to those who have visited the unfriendly confines, and this despite the stadium's lower capacity: Autzen allegedly seats less than 55,000, though attendance often creeps above that number on Saturdays. Autzen is sleek, new, fresh, loud, noisy and Clay Matthews Kids Jersey home to one of the best programs in the country. It hits the high notes.

(Original photo by Dave Weaver, AP; Illustration by Tim McGarry, USA TODAY Sports)

Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.):Nebraska's home field aces two of the four above qualities with ease: Memorial Stadium has as much history as anywhere, with a sellout streak dating back to 1962, and with its red clad crowd and diehard locals has much to offer outside the game itself. It's also a noisy place when properly motivated, especially at night, and holds more seating after some recent renovations.

(Original photo by David J. Phillip, AP; Illustration by Tim McGarry, USA TODAY Sports)

Kyle Field (College Station, Texas):When did Kyle Field regain its place as one of the top venues in college football? Against Nebraska, actually, during a 2010 win at home against the Cornhuskers. The stadium's been loaded since, and especially so after the Aggies' leap to the SEC. Remember: Kyle Field is huge, it's loud, it holds a century plus of history and features some of the most memorable alright, maybe the weirdest traditions in the country.

(Original photo by Elaine Thompson, AP; Illustration by Tim McGarry, USA TODAY Sports)

Husky Stadium (Seattle):Washington felt that a decided home field advantage needed a boost, so here we are: UW put about $250 million into making one of the nation's most John Kuhn Kids Jersey intimidating venues even louder. Great idea! The track around the field has been removed, with the stands moving even closer while still retaining the overhang feel of the second level, an architectural decision that takes upward moving noise and echoes it back down, trebling the cheers of an already vociferous fan base. Husky Stadium also features the most beautiful view in the sport: Lake Washington and the Cascade mountains stand majestically behind the east end zone.

(Original photo by Gerald Herbert, AP; Illustration by Tim McGarry, USA TODAY Sports)

Tiger Stadium (Baton Rouge, La.):It never rains in Death Valley, it's said, though even coach Les Miles had to admit a "stiff, wind driven dew" appeared during the Tigers' win against Auburn on Sept. 21. What you can count on from LSU's home field: size, intimidation, noise, earthquake level reverberations, history, aesthetics and noise. Those who planned and built Tiger Stadium knew what they were doing. Suffocating, claustrophobic and steamy Clay Matthews Youth Jersey Death Valley seems carved out of another era I'm thinking ancient Rome.

Suburban Hoops Report

STORYLINES TO FOLLOW: It's Curie's time. At least the Condors believe it is. A tournament title at Pontiac would be one major step for coach Mike Oliver and his program in its quest to win something anything big. . Simeon has played in the championship four straight years, including three consecutive titles. A title here would make it four in a row and put them in position next year to tie Quincy and Peoria Manual for a record fifth straight title at Pontiac. . How good is West Aurora? The Blackhawks and coach Gordie Kerkman always find out so much about their team in the three days at Pontiac.

UNDERRATED PLAYERS TO WATCH: It's easy to appreciate Bloom's undersized but rugged 4 man James Coleman. Just watch how he plays. . Bloomington shooting guard Brady Rose can play. . He's not the biggest name for OPRF and he's a Purdue football recruit but 6 5 Simmie Cobbs is a presence and highly productive. . Warren guard Eric Gillespie jumped out of the gate quickly this season and is one to watch in arguably the best first round matchup at Pontiac when the Blue Devils square off with Plainfield North. . When it comes to production, you won't find many who produce more in Pontiac than Peoria Manual's Delano Jones, a 6 4 warrior. . Speaking of Peoria Manual, check out the son of former Manual and Illinois star Frank Williams, 6 1 freshman Da'Monte Williams.

SLEEPERS: With the junior backcourt of Glynn Watson and Jordan Ash, unbeaten St. Joseph could claim its first tournament title since 2006. . Proviso East has compiled a 11 2 record at Proviso West over the past three years and reached the title game in each of the past two years. With the backcourt firepower the Pirates feature, led by West Virginia bound Jevon Carter, coach Donnie Boyce's team could make another run. . Benet Academy has a big man inside in 6 9 Sean O'Mara who demands attention, and the Redwings surround him with several solid perimeter shooters.

STORYLINES TO FOLLOW: Over the course of 11 days at Aaron Rodgers Jersey Proviso West, observers will see firsthand if last year's powers Stevenson and Morgan Park are as good as advertised. Both are legit state title contenders, but is this year's version clearly better than last year's? . Prep basketball fans enjoyed their first real taste of Stevenson's Jalen Brunson last year at Proviso. This year it's a chance for Brunson to elevate his status on a stage that has seen so many all time greats shine over the years. . Fenwick is 6 2 WITHOUT its star player, Northwestern recruit Scott Lindsey. We won't go as far as saying it's "Malnati Magic," but can the Friars make a little more noise before they get their top player back? . Uplift is unbeaten and ranked. Yes, we said Uplift. But it won't be easy as St. Charles East will be a difficult opening round game. But everyone will know a little more about this upstart Uplift team a couple weeks from now.

UNDERRATED PLAYERS TO WATCH: Libertyville big man Joe Borcia, an unknown 6 9 junior, is off to an impressive start and putting up big numbers. . The young backcourt at Morgan Park, sophomore Charlie Moore and junior Kain Harris, are blossoming talents and scorers. Harris, however, is one to watch. He has the physical characteristics he's a big, athletic 6 3 guard and really seems to have turned the corner in his approach and consistency. . Keep an eye on developing big man Joe A.J. Hawk Jersey Borcia of Libertyville, who has jumped out of the gate with some big numbers to start his junior year. Borcia will match up with H F and 6 8 Tai Odiase, a UIC recruit, in the opening round. . There are bigger names and bigger prospects at Hinsdale Central, but undervalued shooter Chase Hamilton has been huge for the Red Devils this season. . Just a Hoops Report favorite for you here: St. Charles East junior point Cole Gentry.

STORYLINES TO FOLLOW: The host school won its own holiday tournament last year for the first time in 30 years. Now York is in position to repeat. . Stagg is unbeaten at 8 0 and boasts underrated star Max Strus. But four or five wins at York would validate the fast start a little more. . Everyone is talking about the top three in the tough East Suburban Catholic, but they're not talking about St. Patrick. Can the Shamrocks, off to a 5 2 start, gain a little more steam with a strong showing here? . And just how good is Elk Grove? The Grenadiers graduated plenty of offensive punch a year and haven't played the toughest of schedules thus far, but they sit a surprising 6 1 four weeks into the season.

The Chicago Elite Classic this past Saturday offered up seven games with high level team and individual talent at the UIC Pavilion. The second year of the CEC topped the inaugural event from a year ago as the talent level was higher, the matchups were more intriguing and the games were more competitive.

Here are some thoughts from the City/Suburban Hoops Report following a top notch, well run high school basketball event:

After watching 14 teams play in seven games, the best team maybe most impressive is a better word to use on this one day of a loaded Chicago Elite Classic was Etiwanda out of California. Jordan McLaughlin, a top 50 point guard nationally in the Class of 2014, is the big name. And he impressed the Chicago crowd. McLaughlin is calm and cool, is never rushed A.J. Hawk Green Jersey and is a terrific recruit for USC. Etiwanda is tough, physical, really defends and is very well coached.

No, Etiwanda didn't put on a show or wasn't in the same league as Lone Peak of Utah, a team that dazzled in last year's event and was one of the elite teams nationally all year. But it was the most impressive team the Hoops Report watched over the course of the day at the Chicago Elite Classic.

Etiwanda's impressive showing was a difficult matchup and bad news for previously unbeaten Marian Catholic. However, it's these types of games and opponents that will make Marian Catholic a better, more confident team as the season progresses. It's remarkable this basketball program is in the position it's in right now as one of the unquestioned top teams in the state of Illinois.

You just never get tired of watching Marian Catholic point guard Tyler Ulis. He's without a doubt one of the most cerebral basketball players the Hoops Report has watched over the past two decades, a player who understands a game like a coach understands it and plays the position where he can make a difference every trip down the floor.

The local stars shined throughout the day and night in the Chicago Elite Classic. Marian Catholic's Tyler Ulis (30 points, 8 assists), Curie's Cliff Alexander (22 points, 20 rebounds) and Whitney Young's Jahlil Okafor (24 points, 12 rebounds, 10 of 13 from the field) all showed why they are a trio of truly special talents who will be keeping a close eye on one another as the Player of the Year race heats up.

Simeon doesn't have Jabari Parker anymore. Coach Robert Smith also had to replace Division I talents Kendrick Nunn, Jaylon Tate and Kendall Pollard. Obviously, Simeon remains talented. Williams, 6 4 Zach Norvell, 6 6 Ben Coupet, 6 6 Edward Morrow and 6 4 Jaycee Hillsman.

While everyone was admiring four year superstar and Mr. Williams and Zach Norvell were studying him. Right now, Norvell, a 6 4 sophomore, is a perimeter shooter with great guard size and a basketball feel as he continues to learn how to be a playmaker. Williams, the versatile junior and Illinois commit, is a silky smooth 6 7 perimeter talent. Both were very assertive, comfortable and impressive in the season opening win.

There were plenty of positive vibes for a Aaron Rodgers Youth Jersey highly regarded Curie team that looked considerably better in its win over nationally ranked Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) on Saturday night than it did the previous week when it knocked off a shorthanded St. Rita team in overtime.

While Cliff Alexander is simply one of the most dominating big men you will ever see at the high school level he's a constant presence on the block offensively, on the glass as a ferocious rebounder and defensively as a premier shot blocker the key remains the ascent of the Stamps brothers. Joseph Stamps, a 6 3 senior, and Joshua Stamps, a 6 4 junior, both have scoring capabilities that will hopefully force defenses to think twice about double teaming Alexander on every touch. Joshua Stamps has scored 13 and 12 points in the opening two games, while Joseph Stamps pumped in 22 in the win over Bishop Gorman.

Think about this for a moment: Cliff Alexander's 22 point, 20 rebound, 5 block performance came against a frontline of 7 foot Stephen Zimmerman, the No. 2 prospect in the junior class, and 6 9 Chase Jeter, a coveted high major prospect in the Class of 2015. That's a dominating figure.

As the top ranked player in the country, Jahlil Okafor is the unquestioned star and a dominating figure for Whitney Young. Paul White is the other nationally ranked prospect and is headed to Georgetown. But senior guard Miles Reynolds, who is headed to Saint Louis, brings certain intangibles to this team that are desperately needed: toughness and a competitive spirit.

St. Rita's Dominique Matthews answered the call once again. And people, including college coaches, are taking notice. While Morgan Park's Josh Cunningham, Zion Benton's Milik Yarbrough and Orr's Marlon Jones are the top three unsigned players in the class, Matthews is the best uncommitted guard left on the board in the state of Illinois.

Though it's no fault of his own, Keita Bates Diop of Normal U High is the forgotten star in Illinois this season. That's what happens when you play outside the Chicago media market and happen to be in a class with the likes of Whitney Young's Jahlil Okafor and Curie's Cliff Alexander two players ranked among the top five in the country and a dynamic talent like Marian Catholic's Tyler Ulis. But Bates Diop, who had 21 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, remains a super talent who has yet to reach his ceiling.

The second annual Chicago Elite Classic, with seven games highlighted by both state and nationally ranked teams, brings together the top four players in Illinois in the senior class: Whitney Young's Jahlil Okafor (signed with Duke), Curie's Cliff Alexander (signed with Kansas), Marian Catholic's Tyler Ulis (signed with Kentucky) and Normal U High's Keita Bates Diop (signed with Ohio State).

Fans will also get to see the state's No. 1 ranked junior and sophomore prospect in St. Williams is committed to Illinois and St. Rita senior Vic Law is headed to Northwestern.

Add Benet big man Sean O'Mara (Xavier), Whitney Young's Paul White (Georgetown) and Miles Reynolds (Saint Louis), St. Rita's Dominique Matthews, Simeon's Donte Ingram (Loyola) and junior Edward Morrow, along with a host of others, and the in state collection of talent is off the charts good.

Then there are the six loaded out of state powers with their individual star power. Go ahead and take the top five Illinois prospects and match them up against these five:

McCarthy American football

Mike McCarthy American football

McCarthy was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father was a firefighter and Pittsburgh Police officer as well as a bar owner, who raised McCarthy as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.[1][2]After serving as a graduate assistant at Fort Hays State from 1987 to 1988, McCarthy returned home to Pittsburgh and was hired in 1989 to work under Paul Hackett at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as quarterbacks coach for three seasons before coaching wide receivers during the 1992 season. At first and during the off season he also worked on the Pennsylvania Turnpike to supplement his income.[3]In 1993, McCarthy began a stint with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs; after working two years as an offensive quality control assistant, McCarthy became quarterbacks coach, overseeing the work of Rich Gannon, Elvis Grbac, and Steve Bono. McCarthy spent the 1999 season in the same position with the Packers, coaching Brett Favre in a season when Favre threw for 4,091 yards, the fourth best total of his career. After the Packers released the entire coaching staff following the 1999 season, McCarthy became the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. He would remain in that position for five seasons and was selected as NFC Assistant Coach of the Year by USA Today in 2000. He would largely be the reason behind the successful development of talents such as QB Aaron Brooks, RB Deuce McAllister, and WR Joe Horn. New Orleans would finish 10th, 13th, 3rd in 2002, 14th, and 14th in points scored during his tenure as offensive coordinator. In his first two years, RB Ricky Williams would run for 2,245 yards with 14 TD under McCarthy's guidance before being traded to the Miami Dolphins. In 2005, McCarthy served as offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. His unit, beset by injuries and led by a rookie quarterback (top draft pick Alex Smith), finished the season ranked last in the NFL in points scored and yards gained. McCarthy recorded the best win loss ratio to start the first 25 games of a career among active coaches, setting the record for the best coaching start in Packers' history (Vince Lombardi went 15 10) and tying Washington's Joe Gibbs at 16 9.[6] McCarthy led the Packers to a 13 3 record and made it to the NFC Championship game, where they lost to Cheap Jerseys From China the eventual Super Bowl winning New York Giants in overtime. That year, he finished second in voting for The Associated Press Coach of the Year award, garnering 15 votes to Bill Belichick's 29 votes.[7] He signed a five year contract extension with the team on January 19, 2008, that raised his salary to $3.4 million a year.[8]In 2008, NFL Jerseys Wholesale McCarthy became embroiled in a major controversy involving the future of their franchise quarterback, Brett Favre. The controversy started when Wholesale NFL Jerseys Favre, after having announced his retirement, changed his mind, deciding to play again. Favre had assumed that he would be given the starting quarterback job again. McCarthy and Packers' general manager Ted Thompson had stated their desire to move forward with new starter Aaron Rodgers. Favre was offered the opportunity to be the back up to Rodgers, an offer which Favre refused. Favre was ultimately traded to the New York Jets for a conditional fourth round draft pick.[9]The 2008 season was McCarthy's worst to date with the Packers. Despite a solid showing by Rodgers, who threw for over 4,000 yards and posted a 93.8 passer rating,[10] the Packers started with a 5 5 record, proceeding to lose five consecutive close games until they ended the disappointing season with a 31 21 victory over the Detroit Lions. (The Lions are only the second team in the NFL's post merger (the NFL and original AFL merged prior to the 1970 season) history to go winless in a single season, and the first to go 0 16 in one season after the NFL's transition to a 16 game schedule in 1978.)[11][12] At 6 10, the Packers finished 3rd in the NFC North, only ahead of the Lions, and did not make the playoffs. In 2009, the Packers showed some signs of improvement, but also had struggles. Rodgers improved on 2008's statistics, but was sacked 50 times, more than any other QB in the NFL. The Packers dominated teams with losing records, but were swept by their rival Minnesota Vikings, led by former Packers franchise QB Brett Favre. The Packers lost to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but then came back to beat the NFC East leading Dallas Cowboys.[13] They then began a five game winning streak, and the Packers qualified for the playoffs with a Week 17 win over the Cardinals, finishing at 11 5, the second playoff berth in McCarthy's tenure.[14] The Packers lost the Wild Card round to the Arizona Cardinals in overtime, 51 45, .[15]In 2010, McCarthy led the Packers to a 10 6 finish, never losing by more than four points and never trailing by more than 7 throughout the entire season. This record was good for 2nd in the NFC North, behind the arch rival Chicago Bears, with whom they split victories in the regular season. They finished as the sixth seed in the NFC.[16] The Packers went on to defeat the number three seeded Philadelphia Eagles and then the number one seeded Atlanta Falcons. In the NFC Championship game they played the second seeded Chicago Bears for the third time that season. They won 21 14 and advanced to Super Bowl XLV where they played the Pittsburgh Steelers. Super Bowl XLV was the first time these two storied franchises played each other in the postseason. Together, they have two daughters, Gabrielle Kathleen, born on October 22, 2008 and Isabella Conroy, born on July 29, 2011.

Looking ahead to top playoff matchups

Posted in Unspecified

Looking ahead chi flat iron to top playoff matchups

Broncos at Chargers: Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers rank first and sixth, respectively, in passing yards. They're the only two quarterbacks completing more than 70 percent of their passes.

Texans at Cardinals: Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald are the only sure fire starters. It might be best to avoid the Texans' backfield altogether.

QB Tony Romo, Cowboys: The Saints rank fifth in pass defense, but look at the quarterbacks they've faced. No one has thrown more than Romo. Expect a shootout.

RB Reggie Bush, Lions: In their last five games, the Bears have given up an average of 170 total yards to running backs. They also have allowed 10 total touchdowns.

WR Antonio Brown, Steelers: The Bills are allowing an average of 205 yards per game to wide receivers, and they've given up a league high 15 touchdowns.

QB Matt Ryan, Falcons: He has scored in single digits the last two weeks, thanks to a combined seven interceptions. Now he gets the Seahawks, who are tied for the league lead with 13 picks.

RB Rashad Jennings, Raiders: He takes over for Darren McFadden, but the Giants have allowed an average of 55.4 rushing yards to running backs in the last five games.

WR Cecil Shorts, Jaguars: Justin Blackmon (suspension) isn't around, but the Titans have allowed the second fewest yards to wide receivers and only two touchdowns.

This is your one month warning.

That's how long you have to set up your roster for the playoffs, which run between Weeks 14 and 16 in most leagues. With trade deadlines looming, it's time to look ahead and determine which players figure to have the best matchups. If you own them, you're set; if you don't, go get 'em.

QB Philip Rivers, Chargers: He might finish the season as strong as he started it with games against the Giants, Broncos and Raiders. The Cheap Snapbacks Hats latter two rank among the bottom eight in pass defense, and the Giants had given up at least 20 standard scoring points to quarterbacks in five consecutive games before lucking into Josh Freeman and Matt Barkley.

RB Andre Ellington, Cardinals: He should be the team's lead running back down the stretch, and he'll face two of the bottom seven run Wholesale Hats defenses in the Rams (Week 14) and Titans (Week 15). In Week 16, Ellington faces the once stout Seahawks, who allowed a combined 292 yards to Zac Stacy and Mike James in the last two weeks.

WR Vincent Jackson, Buccaneers: Don't sweat his eight points in the last two games against the Panthers and Seahawks. He has better matchups ahead, including the Bills (Week 14) and Rams (Week 16). The Bills have allowed the second most yards to wide receivers, and the teams rank first and chi flat iron website third in touchdown passes allowed to wideouts.

WR DeSean Jackson, Eagles: He'll have the chance to torch the Lions, Vikings and Bears, who rank among the bottom 10 in pass defense. Jackson is averaging 16.5 yards per catch, and his big play ability could shine against the Bears, who have allowed the third most yards per catch (13).
